Description: Monitors RTP media stream quality metrics including packet loss, jitter, and MOS on Cisco voice platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-RTP-METRICS-MIB?

CISCO-RTP-METRICS-MIB is a Cisco MIB that exposes real-time quality metrics for RTP media streams, modeled closely on the fields found in an RFC 3550 RTCP receiver report. It provides counters such as expected packets, lost packets, loss fraction, loss-interval counts, and average loss distance for each monitored RTP flow. This is software/service-level performance monitoring for voice and video: it lets an administrator directly assess call or stream quality in near real time, catching packet loss or jitter-related degradation that would otherwise only surface as a user complaint about choppy audio or video. It is explicitly modeled on the RTCP receiver report structure defined in RFC 3550, so it depends conceptually on that IETF standard even though it is implemented as a Cisco-specific MIB. It is deployed on Cisco voice and video gateways, routers, and Unified Communications platforms that carry or terminate RTP media streams, exposed via the CISCO-RTP-METRICS-MIB MIB.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-RTP-METRICS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco voice and video gateways and routers
  • Cisco Unified Communications platforms carrying RTP media

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll cfmRtpMetricsTable/cfmRtpMetricsEntry, comparing cfmRtpMetricsExpectedPkts against cfmRtpMetricsLostPkts to compute a packet-loss rate for an active call, and check cfmRtpMetricsFrac (fractional loss) and cfmRtpMetricsAvgLD (average loss distance) for finer-grained loss-pattern detail. A rising cfmRtpMetricsLostPkts count combined with a high cfmRtpMetricsFrac value would reveal a degrading voice/video call quality issue in progress, likely correlating with a MOS score drop.

What Can Be Monitored

  • expected vs. lost RTP packets
  • packet loss fraction
  • loss interval count
  • average loss distance
  • RTP stream validity status
