Organization: Cisco Systems Inc.

Last Updated: 2009-02-06

Category: Cisco Devices, RADIUS and AAA

Description: Manages RADIUS protocol operation including server configuration, statistics, and authentication/accounting on Cisco devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-RADIUS-MIB?

CISCO-RADIUS-MIB manages RADIUS (RFC 2865) client/server configuration, authentication, and accounting behavior on Cisco devices, covering login authentication method, server timeouts/retransmits, dead-time, and accounting log settings. It exposes both global RADIUS client configuration and a table of configured RADIUS servers reachable by the device. Its monitoring value is centered on authentication/accounting service health: tracking crRadiusDeadtime and crRadiusTimeout/crRadiusRetransmits alongside the crRadiusServerTable helps an operator detect an unreachable or slow-responding RADIUS server that would delay or fail user logins, while crRadiusAccountingLogMaxSize and crRadiusAccountingMethod govern accounting record handling. It explicitly builds on the IETF RADIUS protocol (RFC 2865) framework of clients and servers. It is deployed on Cisco routers, switches, and access servers using RADIUS for centralized AAA (authentication, authorization, and accounting), and administrators can download the CISCO-RADIUS-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser for these devices.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-RADIUS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco router
  • Cisco switch
  • Cisco access server (RADIUS AAA client)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll crRadiusServerTable to inventory configured RADIUS servers and check crRadiusTimeout and crRadiusRetransmits to see if a server is being retried excessively, indicating it's slow or down. crRadiusDeadtime reveals how long a failed server is marked dead before being retried, and a server repeatedly cycling through dead/alive states would flag network or server-side instability. crRadiusAccountingLogMaxSize and crRadiusAccountingMethod would be checked if accounting records are being lost or truncated during high login volume.

What Can Be Monitored

  • RADIUS server configuration and reachability
  • authentication timeout and retransmit count
  • server dead-time status
  • accounting log size and method
  • login authentication method
