Category: Cisco Devices, IP and Core Protocols, Routing Protocols

Description: Manages preferred path routing policies directing traffic over specific WAN links on Cisco routers.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-PREFERRED-PATH-MIB?

CISCO-PREFERRED-PATH-MIB is a Cisco-proprietary MIB for managing "preferred path" routing policy on Cisco storage/SAN switching platforms (e.g., MDS series), letting administrators direct traffic over selected paths rather than the shortest path chosen by protocols like FSPF. It exposes route-map style configuration tables that bind preferred-path rules to a VSAN and route index, along with global activation controls and row-status-driven provisioning, plus notifications for path-related events. Its monitoring value is configuration/software-status focused: confirming which preferred-path route-map entries are active, whether strict interface preference is enforced, and whether the global preferred-path feature is enabled. It depends on Fibre Channel routing concepts (FSPF, VSANs) and the general Cisco MIB row-status/storage-type conventions (RFC 2579-style TEXTUAL-CONVENTIONs). It is deployed in Cisco MDS Fibre Channel SAN environments where administrators need deterministic path control distinct from default FSPF routing. Engineers can download the CISCO-PREFERRED-PATH-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-PREFERRED-PATH-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco MDS Fibre Channel SAN switches

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll cPrefPathRouteMapTable/cPrefPathRouteMapEntry, keyed by cPrefPathRouteMapVsanIndex and cPrefPathRouteMapRouteIndex, checking cPrefPathRouteMapRouteActive and cPrefPathRouteMapActive to confirm which preferred-path rule is currently in effect for a given VSAN. If cPrefPathRouteMapIntfPrefStrict is set but traffic is still taking an unexpected path, the admin would check cPrefPathRouteMapGlobalTable's cPrefPathRouteMapGlobalActive to verify the feature is globally enabled. The ciscoPrefPathMIBNotifs group would alert when a route-map entry's status changes unexpectedly.

What Can Be Monitored

  • preferred-path route-map activation state per VSAN
  • strict interface preference setting
  • global preferred-path feature enablement
  • route index configuration

RFC description

Cisco MIB module enabling management of Preferred Path parameters for Fibre Channel networks, allowing granular control over traffic routing between switches independent of standard shortest-path routing protocols.

Start monitoring Cisco MDS Fibre Channel SAN switches (preferred path) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
