Description: Manages DNS client configuration and resolution statistics on ARRIS/Cadant CMTS platforms.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CADANT-CMTS-DNSCLIENT-MIB?
CADANT-CMTS-DNSCLIENT-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from ARRIS/Cadant for the C4 CMTS platform, defining objects for the DNS client function used by the CMTS to resolve hostnames for its own management and provisioning operations. It exposes configuration data such as whether the DNS client is enabled (cadDnsClientEnable), the default domain, configured DNS server addresses and their preference order, and a table of domain name search suffixes. Its monitoring value is chiefly software/configuration status: administrators can confirm DNS resolution is enabled and correctly pointed at working name servers, since a broken DNS client configuration can cause management, logging, or authentication failures on the CMTS. It builds on standard DNS concepts (RFC 1035) applied to Cadant's proprietary CMTS management framework. It is typically used by cable operators, where CADANT-CMTS-DNSCLIENT-MIB SNMP monitoring verifies head-end CMTS chassis have reliable name resolution for internal operations support systems.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CADANT-CMTS-DNSCLIENT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- ARRIS (now CommScope) Cadant C4 CMTS platform
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would check cadDnsClientEnable and cadDnsClientDefaultDomain to confirm DNS resolution is turned on and using the correct default domain, then walk cadDnsClientServerTable/cadDnsClientServerEntry to verify configured DNS server IP addresses (cadDnsClientServerIpAddr) and their preference (cadDnsClientServerPrefId) are reachable. If a CMTS is failing to resolve hostnames for logging or TACACS+ authentication, this table would reveal whether the wrong or unreachable DNS server is configured, or if cadDnsClientServerRowStatus shows an entry is not active.
What Can Be Monitored
- DNS client enable status
- default domain name
- configured DNS server addresses
- DNS server preference order
- domain name search suffixes
