Description: Provides management objects for configuring and monitoring Fibre Channel SPAN (Switched Port Analyzer) sessions on Cisco MDS SAN switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-FC-SPAN-MIB?

CISCO-FC-SPAN-MIB is a Cisco-specific MIB for Fibre Channel SAN switches (MDS platforms) that configures and monitors SPAN (Switched Port Analyzer) sessions, a feature that mirrors traffic from source ports to a destination analysis port without disrupting normal switching. It exposes configuration data (session definitions, source/destination port mappings) as well as status data such as administrative and operational state of each SPAN session and the reason a session is inactive. Its monitoring value is largely operational/software-status oriented: it lets an operator confirm a diagnostic SPAN session is actually running (operational status up) versus silently failed, and diagnose why (via the inactive-reason object), rather than exposing hardware sensors like temperature or power. It depends on standard IF-MIB ifIndex values to identify source and destination interfaces. It is typically used by SAN and network engineers troubleshooting Fibre Channel traffic issues by capturing traffic to an external protocol analyzer, a workflow for which the CISCO-FC-SPAN-MIB MIB provides the necessary session and status objects.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-FC-SPAN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco MDS Fibre Channel SAN switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would check cspanSessionTable/cspanSessionEntry, indexed by cspanSessionIndex, comparing cspanSessionAdminStatus to cspanSessionOperStatus to verify a configured SPAN session is actually forwarding mirrored traffic to cspanSessionDestIfIndex. If cspanSessionOperStatus shows down while admin status is up, cspanSessionInactiveReason reveals why (e.g. destination port down or resource limit hit). cspanSourcesIfTable/cspanSourcesIfEntry lists which source interfaces (cspanSourcesIfIndex) are being mirrored, letting an engineer confirm the right ports are being captured, and cspanMaxSessions bounds how many SPAN sessions the switch supports.

What Can Be Monitored

  • SPAN session admin vs operational status
  • reason a SPAN session is inactive
  • configured SPAN source interfaces
  • SPAN destination interface
  • maximum supported SPAN sessions
