What Is CISCO-PORT-QOS-MIB?

CISCO-PORT-QOS-MIB is a Cisco MIB for managing per-port rate-limiting and traffic-shaping quality-of-service (QoS) policies on Cisco Layer 3 switch and router platforms. It defines tables for rate-limit configuration (direction, enable state, rate, burst size) and traffic-shaping configuration (enable state, rate, burst size) applied per port. While primarily a configuration/policy MIB rather than a hardware-health MIB, it supports operational monitoring of QoS enforcement, letting administrators confirm traffic-shaping and rate-limiting policies are correctly applied and active on each port, which is a software/configuration-state indicator of network health. It works alongside the standard IF-MIB (for identifying the physical/logical port index) and Cisco's broader QoS MIB family. It is deployed on Cisco Layer 3 switches and routers that need per-port bandwidth control for traffic engineering or SLA enforcement. Engineers can download the CISCO-PORT-QOS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would walk cportQosRLConfigTable/cportQosRLConfigEntry to verify cportQosRLConfigEnable is set as expected and check cportQosRLConfigRate and cportQosRLConfigBurstSize against the intended policy for a given port and cportQosRLConfigDirection (ingress/egress). Similarly, cportQosTSConfigTable entries (cportQosTSConfigEnable, cportQosTSConfigRate, cportQosTSConfigBurstSize) reveal whether traffic shaping is active and correctly rate-limited. A port showing cportQosRLConfigEnable as false when a rate-limit policy was expected would indicate a QoS configuration drift or failure to apply.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cportQosPrePolicyPkts OID:

Select a Cisco Layer 3 switch/router (per-port QoS) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cportQosPrePolicyPkts into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The count of packets prior to executing any QoS policies. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in packets), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
