Category: ATM, Cisco Devices

Description: Manages Private Network-to-Network Interface (PNNI) ATM routing protocol configuration on Cisco ATM switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-PNNI-MIB?

CISCO-PNNI-MIB provides Cisco-specific extensions to the ATM Forum's standard PNNI (Private Network-to-Network Interface) MIB, managing PNNI routing behavior on Cisco ATM switches. It exposes configuration data for background route computation, resource-management polling, administrative weight (routing metric) modes, and per-node PNNI settings such as auto-summarization and static-route redistribution. Its monitoring value is largely operational/software: polling intervals and thresholds (background poll interval, route optimization threshold) reveal how actively the switch is recalculating PNNI routes, and node-level objects show whether a node's routing behavior (summarization, redistribution) matches intended design. It explicitly extends the ATM Forum PNNI MIB standard and is meant to be deployed alongside it rather than in isolation. It is used in carrier and enterprise ATM WAN backbones built on Cisco ATM switches that participate in PNNI hierarchical routing. Engineers can download the CISCO-PNNI-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-PNNI-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco ATM switch running PNNI

Monitoring Examples

ciscoPnniNodeTable/ciscoPnniNodeEntry rows expose ciscoPnniNodeAutoSummary and ciscoPnniNodeRedistributeStatic per PNNI node, letting an administrator confirm route summarization and static-route redistribution are configured as designed. ciscoPnniBackgroundPollInterval and ciscoPnniRouteOptimizationThreshold show how frequently and aggressively the switch recomputes routes; an unexpectedly long poll interval could explain slow convergence after a topology change. ciscoPnniMaxAdminWeightPercentage and ciscoPnniAdminWeightMode would be checked when diagnosing why PNNI is preferring an unexpected path.

What Can Be Monitored

  • PNNI route recalculation/poll interval
  • administrative weight mode
  • route optimization threshold
  • node auto-summary/static redistribution settings
