Organization: Cisco Systems, Inc.

Last Updated: 2001-08-28

Category: Cisco Devices, IP and Core Protocols

Description: Manages ICMP ping test operations for IP reachability testing and round-trip time measurement on Cisco devices.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring CISCO-PING-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is CISCO-PING-MIB?

CISCO-PING-MIB lets an administrator remotely trigger and retrieve results of ICMP (or other protocol) ping tests from a Cisco device's SNMP agent, without needing CLI access. It exposes configuration objects for defining a ping operation (target address/protocol, packet count/size, timeout, delay) and result objects reporting how many packets were sent versus received. It is used to actively test and monitor network-layer reachability and round-trip health from the perspective of the device itself, which is effectively a software-driven diagnostic/health check rather than a passive counter. It is a Cisco-proprietary equivalent of the later, standards-based DISMAN-PING-MIB, and does not have a hard runtime dependency on other MIBs beyond standard IP addressing conventions. CISCO-PING-MIB SNMP monitoring is used across Cisco routers and switches wherever an NMS needs to originate reachability tests from a managed device to a remote host for fault diagnosis or SLA verification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-PING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco router or switch (any platform supporting the CISCO-PING-MIB agent)

Monitoring Examples

An NMS creates a row in ciscoPingTable/ciscoPingEntry (indexed by ciscoPingSerialNumber), setting ciscoPingAddress, ciscoPingProtocol, ciscoPingPacketCount, and ciscoPingPacketSize to define a test, optionally enabling ciscoPingTrapOnCompletion. After the test runs, ciscoPingSentPackets versus ciscoPingReceivedPackets reveals packet loss to the target -- a large gap between the two indicates a reachability or latency problem on the path from the device.

What Can Be Monitored

  • packets sent vs. received (packet loss)
  • ping target address/protocol
  • packet size/count/timeout configuration
  • completion trap status
