What Is CISCO-LWAPP-HA-MIB?

The CISCO-LWAPP-HA-MIB manages and reports high-availability, Stateful Switchover, and redundancy status for Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers that terminate LWAPP/CAPWAP tunnels from lightweight access points. It exposes objects describing the HA peer's IP/MAC addressing, redundancy interface addressing, virtual MAC address, and which unit is currently primary. Administrators rely on it to monitor the hardware/software redundancy health of a WLC pair, confirming cLHaPrimaryUnit reflects the expected active controller and that peer IP/MAC addresses are correctly reachable, since a mismatch or unreachable peer signals an HA link failure or unexpected failover. It is part of the Cisco LWAPP/CAPWAP wireless controller MIB family, built on standard IP addressing conventions such as InetAddressType/InetAddress for its peer objects. It is deployed in enterprise WLAN designs using paired Cisco WLCs configured for SSO/HA to ensure continuous wireless service during a controller failure. An admin polls cLHaPrimaryUnit to confirm which controller in an HA pair is currently active, and checks cLHaPeerIpAddress/cLHaPeerMacAddress against expected values to verify the HA link to the standby unit is intact. cLHaVirtualMacAddress and cLHaRedundancyIpAddress reveal the shared identity used during failover, so an unexpected change in cLHaPrimaryUnit combined with peer address unreachability would indicate an HA failover event or split-brain condition.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cLHaSecondaryControllerUsageDayCounter OID:

Select a Cisco Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) pair configured for HA/SSO as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cLHaSecondaryControllerUsageDayCounter into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. This object represents the number of days the secondary controller is used. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
