Description: Manages IMA group and link configuration, status, and statistics for ATM inverse multiplexing.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-IMA-MIB?

CISCO-IMA-MIB is a Cisco extension to the standard ATM Forum IMA (Inverse Multiplexing for ATM) v1.1 MIB (IMA-MIB), adding Cisco-specific configuration, control, and statistics for IMA groups and links on ATM WAN interfaces. Its cimaGroupTable (which AUGMENTS the standard imaGroupEntry) reports accumulated buffer delay, ICP (IMA Control Protocol) cell counters — transmitted, received, errored, invalid, and missing ICP cells (cimaGrpNumTxIcpCells, cimaGrpNumRxErrIcpCells, cimaGrpNumRxMissingIcpCells) — group restart status, near-end IMA version, maximum cell rate, and auto-restart/version-fallback controls; the parallel cimaLinkTable (AUGMENTS imaLinkEntry) tracks per-link LIF/LODS defect integration timers and the same class of ICP cell counters at link granularity, while cimaFeatureTable reports platform-wide IMA group capacity and supported IMA ID range per physical entity. Because ICP cell errors and missing-cell counts directly reflect IMA link/group synchronization health, monitoring this MIB is useful for detecting a degrading or misconfigured IMA bundle before it triggers a full group restart — rising cimaGrpNumRxInvalidIcpCells or cimaLinkNumRxMissingIcpCells on a specific link points to that link as the likely cause of instability in the bundle. It depends on the standard IMA-MIB (for imaGroupEntry/imaLinkEntry and shared textual conventions) and ENTITY-MIB (entPhysicalIndex), and is deployed on Cisco WAN aggregation routers/access platforms using ATM IMA bundles; engineers troubleshooting ATM IMA bundles often consult the CISCO-IMA-MIB MIB Browser view for these ICP cell and alarm objects.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-IMA-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco WAN routers/access platforms with ATM IMA (Inverse Multiplexing for ATM) interfaces

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls cimaLinkNumRxMissingIcpCells and cimaLinkNumRxErrIcpCells per link in an IMA group; a single link showing a disproportionate rise in missing/errored ICP cells versus its group peers identifies that link as the probable cause of an IMA group's reduced bandwidth or restart.

What Can Be Monitored

  • IMA group accumulated delay
  • transmitted/received/errored/invalid/missing ICP cell counters (group and link level)
  • IMA group restart status and near-end version
  • IMA group max cell rate
  • link LIF/LODS integration timers
  • IMA group/link auto-restart sync state

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cimaGrpNumTxIcpCells OID:

Select a Cisco WAN routers/access platforms with ATM IMA interface as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cimaGrpNumTxIcpCells into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the number of error-free transmitted ICP cells in the IMA group. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
