Organization: Cisco Systems, Inc.

Last Updated: 2001-09-14

Category: Alarm and Event Management, Cisco Devices, Network Interfaces, Network Monitoring (RMON)

Description: Configures threshold-based alarms on per-interface utilization and error rate counters.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-IF-THRESHOLD-MIB?

CISCO-IF-THRESHOLD-MIB lets administrators define reusable threshold templates for per-interface utilization and error-rate alarms on Cisco routers and switches. It exposes configuration data for threshold templates, their assignment to sets of interfaces, and notification hold-down behavior, rather than raw traffic counters themselves. This supports monitoring interface health at scale, since a template's thresholds being crossed on an assigned interface (surfaced via associated notifications) reveals excessive utilization or error rates on that link before it causes a service-affecting outage. The module notes it should be used instead of the generic EVENT-MIB when a common threshold set needs to be applied across multiple interfaces at once. It is typically deployed in enterprise and service-provider networks needing consistent alarm policies across large numbers of interfaces. Engineers can download the CISCO-IF-THRESHOLD-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-IF-THRESHOLD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco routers
  • Cisco switches

Monitoring Examples

An administrator configures cifthTemplateTable (cifthTemplateEntry rows indexed by cifthTemplateIndex) with a cifthTemplateName and assigns it to multiple interfaces, then monitors cifthTemplateNotifyHoldDownTime to control alarm flapping. Checking cifthThresholdTable (cifthThresholdEntry) shows the specific threshold values being enforced under each template, and cifthTemplateLastChange or cifthThresholdLastChange indicates when thresholds were last modified. A spike in threshold-crossing notifications tied to one cifthTemplateIndex assigned to several interfaces would indicate a systemic issue rather than a single bad port.

What Can Be Monitored

  • threshold template configuration
  • template-to-interface assignment
  • notification hold-down time
  • threshold values
  • template/threshold last-change time
