Category: Cisco Devices, Network Interfaces, Network Monitoring (RMON)

Description: Extends top-N interface utilization ranking with additional Cisco-specific metrics and sorting criteria.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-INTERFACETOPN-EXT-MIB?

CISCO-INTERFACETOPN-EXT-MIB is a Cisco Systems proprietary MIB extending the standard INTERFACETOPN-MIB (Top-N interface ranking, sorting interfaces by a chosen counter over an interval) with Cisco-specific sorting capability. Its objects cover advertised sorting capabilities and a control table recording the counter type to sort by, interface type filter, and VLAN number scope. As a configuration MIB it lets an administrator set up a Top-N interface report scoped to a specific VLAN and counter type — for example, the busiest interfaces on a given VLAN by output octets. It is deployed on Cisco routers/switches supporting Top-N interface ranking. Engineers can download the CISCO-INTERFACETOPN-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-INTERFACETOPN-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco routers/switches (Top-N interface ranking)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator configures citneInterfaceTopNControlTable to rank the busiest interfaces on a specific VLAN by output octets, narrowing a Top-N report to the segment under investigation.

What Can Be Monitored

  • Top-N interface ranking scope and counter-type configuration
