What Is CISCO-IETF-PIM-MIB?

CISCO-IETF-PIM-MIB is Cisco's address-family-independent implementation of a Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) router management MIB, created because no suitable RFC or Internet Draft existed at the time for an AF-independent PIM MIB (it builds on the ideas of RFC 2934). It belongs to Cisco's IP multicast routing MIB family and exposes per-interface PIM configuration and operational state, including addressing, mode, Designated Router status, and protocol timers. Its main monitoring value is confirming multicast routing protocol software health: operators check DR election results, hello/join-prune interval consistency, and interface addressing to ensure PIM neighbor relationships and multicast forwarding trees are functioning correctly. It is explicitly noted as based on RFC 2934 with Cisco extensions for IPv4/IPv6 address-family independence, pending a stable IETF replacement. It is deployed on Cisco routers participating in IP multicast networks using PIM, across both IPv4 and IPv6 topologies. Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll cPimIfTable/cPimIfEntry, keyed by cPimIfIndex, to check cPimIfMode, cPimIfAddressType/cPimIfAddress, and cPimIfDR to confirm the expected router is acting as Designated Router on a multicast-enabled segment. Mismatched cPimIfHelloInterval or cPimIfJoinPruneInterval values between neighboring routers (compared against the global cPimJoinPruneInterval) would explain PIM neighbor adjacency flapping. cPimNotifs traps can alert when a DR election changes unexpectedly, which would disrupt multicast tree state on that segment.
