What Is CISCO-IETF-IPMROUTE-MIB?

CISCO-IETF-IPMROUTE-MIB is a Cisco-authored, address-family-independent MIB for managing IP multicast routing state, created because no address-family-independent RFC/Internet-Draft existed at the time; it is based on RFC 2932 with extensions supporting multiple address families, independent of the specific multicast routing protocol (PIM, DVMRP, etc.) in use. It exposes the multicast routing table itself — per-(source,group) route entries with upstream neighbor, incoming interface, uptime, and expiry — plus a global multicast-routing enable flag and route-count summary. Its monitoring value is protocol/software status for multicast forwarding: tracking cIpMRouteEntryCount and per-entry cIpMRouteUpTime/ExpiryTime reveals whether multicast routes are being established and refreshed correctly, and a route nearing expiry without renewal signals a stalled multicast source or receiver. It is explicitly based on RFC 2932 (the standard IP multicast MIB) with Cisco's address-family-independent extensions, pending a stable IETF replacement. It is deployed on Cisco routers and switches performing IP multicast routing (PIM-SM/SSM, etc.). Engineers can download the CISCO-IETF-IPMROUTE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An admin can check cIpMRouteEnable to confirm multicast routing is globally active, then walk cIpMRouteTable keyed by cIpMRouteGroup and cIpMRouteSource to see each active multicast route's cIpMRouteUpstreamNeighbor and cIpMRouteInIfIndex. A route whose cIpMRouteExpiryTime is imminent without a corresponding refresh (reflected in cIpMRouteUpTime resetting) suggests the upstream join state is not being refreshed, indicating a multicast source or RPF path problem. cIpMRouteEntryCount trending unexpectedly high can indicate multicast route-table growth from a misbehaving source flooding many (S,G) states.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cIpMRoutePkts OID:

Select a Cisco router/switch (IP multicast routing) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cIpMRoutePkts into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of packets which this router has received from these sources and addressed to this multicast group address. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
