Organization: Cisco Systems Inc.

Last Updated: 2003-11-07

Category: Cisco Devices, Fibre Channel and Storage

Description: Provides management objects for the Fabric Device Management Interface (FDMI), which registers and queries host bus adapter attributes in a Fibre Channel SAN.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-FDMI-MIB?

CISCO-FDMI-MIB is a Cisco MIB module implementing the Fabric Device Management Interface (FDMI) as defined in the Fibre Channel Generic Services-4 (FC-GS-4) specification, used in Fibre Channel storage area networks. It exposes information about Host Bus Adapters (HBAs) that have registered with the fabric, including identity and hardware/firmware attributes. Its monitoring value is squarely in hardware and firmware inventory/status: it reports HBA manufacturer, serial number, model, hardware version, driver version, and option ROM (firmware) version, which lets administrators detect out-of-date drivers/firmware or unexpected/unauthorized HBAs attached to the fabric. It depends conceptually on the FC-GS-4 FDMI specification and is used alongside Cisco's broader Fibre Channel management MIBs (e.g., for zoning and fabric login) on MDS-series SAN switches. It is deployed in enterprise SAN environments running Cisco MDS multilayer directors/switches. Engineers can download the CISCO-FDMI-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-FDMI-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco MDS Fibre Channel SAN switch
  • Fibre Channel Host Bus Adapter (HBA)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would walk cfdmiHbaInfoTable/cfdmiHbaInfoEntry to enumerate every registered HBA by cfdmiHbaInfoId, checking cfdmiHbaInfoMfg, cfdmiHbaInfoModel, and cfdmiHbaInfoSn against an asset inventory. Comparing cfdmiHbaInfoDriverVer and cfdmiHbaInfoOptROMVer across hosts would reveal servers running outdated HBA drivers or firmware that could cause fabric instability. The cfdmiRejectRegNotifyEnable object controls whether the switch notifies on rejected FDMI registrations, which is useful for spotting non-compliant or misbehaving HBAs attempting to join the fabric.

What Can Be Monitored

  • registered HBA identity
  • HBA manufacturer and model
  • HBA serial number
  • HBA hardware version
  • HBA driver version
  • HBA option ROM/firmware version
