Category: Cisco Devices, Fibre Channel and Storage

Description: Provides management objects for executing Fibre Channel traceroute operations to discover end-to-end paths through an FC fabric on Cisco MDS platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-FCTRACEROUTE-MIB?

CISCO-FCTRACEROUTE-MIB is a Cisco-specific MIB for Fibre Channel SAN switches (MDS platforms) that lets management stations initiate and monitor traceroute operations to discover the end-to-end path a Fibre Channel frame takes through a fabric, analogous to IP traceroute. It exposes configuration objects for defining a traceroute request (target address, VSAN, timeout) plus status objects showing whether the trace is running, completed, or failed, and can be configured to send a trap on completion. This is a diagnostic/software-operation MIB rather than a continuous-monitoring MIB: its value is in verifying fabric path health and reachability on demand, which helps troubleshoot routing or zoning problems within a VSAN. It depends on Cisco's VSAN addressing model used across the CISCO MDS MIB family. It is used by SAN administrators actively diagnosing connectivity or latency issues between devices in a Fibre Channel fabric. Engineers can download the CISCO-FCTRACEROUTE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-FCTRACEROUTE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco MDS Fibre Channel SAN switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would create a row in fcTraceRouteTable/fcTraceRouteEntry, setting fcTraceRouteVsanIndex, fcTraceRouteTargetAddrType/fcTraceRouteTargetAddr, and fcTraceRouteTimeout, then set fcTraceRouteAdminStatus to start the trace and poll fcTraceRouteOperStatus until it completes. Enabling fcTraceRouteTrapOnCompletion lets the management station be notified asynchronously rather than polling, useful when diagnosing an intermittent path problem between two storage arrays in the same VSAN. fcTraceRouteAgeInterval controls how long results are retained before the row is aged out via fcTraceRouteRowStatus.

What Can Be Monitored

  • traceroute admin vs operational status
  • target device address and VSAN
  • trace timeout and age interval
  • completion notification (trap)
  • row lifecycle status
