Organization: Cisco Systems Inc.

Last Updated: 2002-10-07

Category: Cisco Devices, Fibre Channel and Storage

Description: Provides management objects for initiating and monitoring Fibre Channel ping (echo) operations to test FC fabric connectivity on Cisco MDS platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-FCPING-MIB?

CISCO-FCPING-MIB provides management objects to initiate and monitor Fibre Channel ping (echo) tests over an FC fabric, allowing administrators to verify end-to-end reachability between fabric-attached devices on Cisco MDS switches. It exposes a table for configuring ping parameters such as target address, VSAN, packet count, payload size, and timeout, along with corresponding operational results. The MIB is used for active fault-diagnosis rather than passive hardware monitoring, letting an administrator confirm software/fabric reachability status of remote FC endpoints on demand. It depends on Fibre Channel addressing and VSAN concepts defined elsewhere in Cisco's FC MIB family. It is deployed on Cisco MDS multilayer SAN switches for troubleshooting fabric connectivity issues. Engineers can download the CISCO-FCPING-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-FCPING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco MDS series Fibre Channel SAN switches

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would create a row in fcPingTable, setting fcPingAddress, fcPingVsanIndex, fcPingPacketCount, and fcPingPacketTimeout, then poll the resulting entry to see how many of the requested pings succeeded within fcPingDelay and fcPingAgeInterval. A high failure rate or excessive delay values returned for a given fcPingIndex would indicate a fabric path problem or an unreachable device on that VSAN.

What Can Be Monitored

  • FC ping target address
  • VSAN index
  • packet count and payload size
  • ping timeout and delay
  • measured round-trip results
