What Is CISCO-DS1-EXT-MIB?

CISCO-DS1-EXT-MIB provides Cisco-specific extensions to the standard DS1/E1 (T1/E1) interface MIB defined in RFC 2495, adding proprietary configuration and diagnostic objects for Cisco WAN interface hardware. It exposes configuration data such as line type and loopback code detection settings, call-related trunk conditioning options, and current alarm/performance status for each DS1/E1 line. It is explicitly useful for monitoring hardware/line status: the current status table and alarm objects surface conditions like Loss of Signal (LOS), Loss of Frame (LOF), Alarm Indication Signal (AIS), and bipolar violations (BPV) on physical T1/E1 circuits. As an extension MIB it has a direct and notable dependency on the standard DS1/E1 MIB (RFC 2495), which it supplements rather than replaces. It is typically deployed on Cisco routers and access servers equipped with T1/E1 WAN interface cards used for voice or leased-line connectivity. Engineers can download the CISCO-DS1-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An engineer would poll cds1CurrentTable/cds1CurrentEntry to check current alarm state on a T1/E1 port, cross-referencing cds1ConfigTable's cds1LineType and cds1LoopbackCodeDetection settings to confirm the port is provisioned correctly. A cds1Alarm entry indicating a Red or Yellow alarm alongside repeated cds1RepetitionResult failures would point to a physical line fault such as LOS or LOF on the circuit. cds1CallConfigTable's cds1CallTrunkConditionEnable can be checked when diagnosing trunk conditioning behavior during a T1 failure.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cds1LOSCounts OID:

Select a Cisco router or access server as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cds1LOSCounts into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of times the Loss Of Signal defect was detected with or without integrating to LOS alarm. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
