Description: Manages wireless intrusion detection on Cisco 802.11 infrastructure, monitoring rogue AP detection, attack signatures, and containment actions.

What Is CISCO-DOT11-WIDS-MIB?

CISCO-DOT11-WIDS-MIB is a Cisco wireless security MIB implemented on IOS-based 802.11 access points, providing a wireless intrusion detection system (WIDS) that reports attempted attacks against the wireless network's security. It exposes configuration for flood-detection thresholds and blacklist behavior, plus tables tracking detected EAPOL flood attacks by client MAC address, along with notification objects for reporting authentication failures and other attack events. Its monitoring focus is squarely on security-fault/status detection rather than general hardware health: cDot11WidsEapolFloodTable entries and ciscoDot11WidsAuthFailures reveal active attack attempts, client flooding behavior, and blacklist triggers in real time. It depends on the underlying 802.11 MIB framework (IEEE802dot11-MIB conventions) and Cisco's wireless infrastructure MIBs for AP and client context. It is deployed on Cisco wireless LAN access points and controllers in enterprise environments to detect rogue devices and denial-of-service style wireless attacks. Engineers can download the CISCO-DOT11-WIDS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-DOT11-WIDS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco IOS-based 802.11 access point
  • Cisco wireless LAN controller
  • Cisco IOS-based 802.11 wireless access points and WLAN controllers

Monitoring Examples

A security operator would monitor cDot11WidsEapolFloodTable/cDot11WidsEapolFloodEntry, keyed by cDot11WidsEapolFloodIndex, to see which cDot11WidsEapolFloodClientMac addresses are generating high cDot11WidsEapolFloodClientCount values within the configured cDot11WidsEapolFloodInterval, and compare that against cDot11WidsEapolFloodThreshold to see if blacklist action was triggered per cDot11WidsBlackListThreshold and cDot11WidsBlackListDuration. Receiving a ciscoDot11WidsAuthFailures trap alongside a spike in cDot11WidsEapolFloodClientCount would indicate an active EAPOL-flood-based denial-of-service attempt against the AP. This lets security teams identify and respond to rogue or malicious clients in real time.

What Can Be Monitored

  • EAPOL flood detection enable state
  • EAPOL flood client MAC and count
  • flood detection threshold and interval
  • blacklist threshold and duration
  • authentication failure events

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cDot11WidsEapolFloodTotalCount OID:

Select a Cisco wireless access point or WLAN controller as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cDot11WidsEapolFloodTotalCount into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This object gives the accumulated count of the number of authentication attempts made by all the clients at the time of query. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
