What Is COLUBRIS-DEVICE-DOT1X-MIB?

COLUBRIS-DEVICE-DOT1X-MIB is a vendor-specific SNMP module for Colubris Networks wireless access points and controllers, a product line later acquired by HP and folded into the HP MSM wireless portfolio. It exposes per-station IEEE 802.1X authentication data, including supplicant identity, authenticator state machine status, and session accounting for wireless or wired clients tied to a port. In monitoring terms this MIB is used mainly for software/protocol status rather than hardware health: it lets an administrator watch each station's PAE (Port Access Entity) state, backend authentication state, port authorization status, session duration, and the cause of session termination to catch stuck or failing 802.1X handshakes. It builds on the standard IEEE 802.1X model and complements the IETF IEEE8021-PAE-MIB framework by adding enterprise-specific station-level detail. It is typically deployed in enterprise or campus wireless networks where 802.1X/EAP is used for secure client onboarding and network access control. Engineers can download the COLUBRIS-DEVICE-DOT1X-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in COLUBRIS-DEVICE-DOT1X-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Colubris/HP wireless access point
  • Colubris/HP wireless LAN controller

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll coDeviceDot1xStatusTable/coDeviceDot1xStatusEntry, keyed by coDev1xStaIndex, to read coDev1xStaMacAddress, coDev1xStaUserName, coDev1xStaPaeState, and coDev1xStaBackendAuthState for each associated client. A station stuck in an authenticating PAE state with a non-success coDev1xStaBackendAuthState indicates a RADIUS or credential failure, while a spike in coDev1xStaTerminateCause values across many stations suggests a misconfigured authentication server. coDeviceDot1xStatsTable/coDeviceDot1xStatsEntry supplements this with aggregate 802.1X protocol counters useful for spotting retransmission or timeout trends.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-station 802.1X PAE state
  • backend authentication state
  • authenticated port status
  • session duration
  • session termination cause
  • 802.1X protocol statistics
