What Is CISCO-DLSW-MIB?

CISCO-DLSW-MIB is a Cisco proprietary MIB for managing Data Link Switching (DLSw), a technology that tunnels legacy SNA and NetBIOS traffic over IP networks. It exposes configuration data such as version and vendor identifiers, plus operational data about peer TCP connections, circuit states, and traffic-shaping resource exclusivity settings. It is explicitly useful for monitoring software status on the device: ciscoDlswUpTime tracks how long the DLSw process has been running, ciscoDlswStatus reports whether the switch is operational, and the connection statistics counters (active connections, close-idle, close-busy) reveal peer session health. This MIB is a Cisco extension and does not appear to depend heavily on other standard MIBs, though it shares general SNMP conventions with the broader Cisco MIB tree. It is typically deployed on Cisco routers acting as DLSw peers bridging legacy mainframe/SNA traffic across modern IP WANs. Engineers can download the CISCO-DLSW-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

An operator would poll ciscoDlswTConnStatActiveConnections to see how many DLSw peer connections are currently up, and watch ciscoDlswTConnStatCloseIdles and ciscoDlswTConnStatCloseBusys for connections closing due to idle timeout or congestion, which would indicate flapping or overloaded peer links. Checking ciscoDlswUpTime and ciscoDlswStatus together confirms whether the DLSw feature itself has recently restarted or is in a degraded state. ciscoDlswVersionString helps confirm interoperability when troubleshooting mismatched DLSw peers.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using ciscoDlswTConnStatCloseIdles OID:

Select a Cisco router (Data Link Switching, legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type ciscoDlswTConnStatCloseIdles into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The number of times transport connections in this node exited the connected state with zero active circuits on the transport connection. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
