What Is CISCO-CDP-MIB?

CISCO-CDP-MIB is a well-known Cisco MIB for the Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP), a Layer 2 protocol that lets Cisco (and CDP-capable) devices discover directly connected neighbors and exchange basic identity and capability information. It exposes per-interface CDP configuration (enable state, message/advertisement interval) and a neighbor cache table holding information learned from adjacent devices, plus extended per-interface trust and CoS settings. Its monitoring value is primarily topology and neighbor-discovery visibility rather than classic hardware health: administrators poll the cdpCache to build an accurate picture of physical network topology, verify that CDP is enabled on the expected interfaces (cdpInterfaceEnable) with the correct advertisement timing (cdpInterfaceMessageInterval), and check trust/CoS settings on interfaces carrying voice traffic. It depends on the standard IF-MIB ifIndex convention to associate CDP data with physical interfaces. It is typically deployed on essentially all Cisco switches and routers as a baseline discovery and topology-mapping tool used by network management systems. This is a heavily searched Cisco MIB, since cisco-cdp-mib is the standard reference for monitoring Cisco Discovery Protocol neighbor information via SNMP.

Monitoring Examples

An operator would walk cdpInterfaceTable / cdpInterfaceEntry to confirm cdpInterfaceEnable is true on interfaces expected to advertise CDP, and separately query cdpCache to see the neighbor device names, platforms, and addresses learned on each local port, useful for auto-discovering network topology. A disappearing entry from cdpCache for a previously-seen neighbor would indicate that a downstream device went down or a cable was unplugged.
