Description: Manages cable plant diagnostics including TDR testing on Cisco cable platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-CABLE-DIAG-MIB?

CISCO-CABLE-DIAG-MIB is a Cisco enterprise MIB (under ciscoMgmt) that manages copper-cable diagnostic testing on Cisco LAN switch interfaces — despite "cable" evoking a CATV/cable-plant platform, the objects here (indexed simply by ifIndex from IF-MIB, with no CMTS/DOCSIS-specific typing) describe generic Ethernet copper-cable fault-detection tests, not a cable-television headend. It defines ccdPrbsIfTable for Pseudo Random Binary Sequence (PRBS) bit-error testing — ccdPrbsIfAction (start/stop/errorReset/running/notRunning), ccdPrbsIfActionStatus, and an error-count Gauge32 ccdPrbsIfTestErrors with its ccdPrbsIfTestErrorsResetTime and max-value objects — and ccdTdrIfTable for Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) tests, which send a signal down the cable pairs and report distance-to-fault-style results (ccdTdrIfAction/ActionStatus/LastTestTime/ResultValid). Monitoring these tables lets an operator confirm a suspect copper link's cable integrity — a nonzero and growing ccdPrbsIfTestErrors count, or a completed TDR test reporting a fault pair status, points to a physical-layer cabling problem rather than a switch or NIC misconfiguration. It depends on IF-MIB for ifIndex and SNMPv2-TC for TimeStamp/TruthValue, and it is deployed on Cisco Catalyst-family LAN switches with cable-diagnostic-capable copper ports; administrators can pull the CISCO-CABLE-DIAG-MIB MIB Browser output to confirm exact object names before scripting cable-health checks.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-CABLE-DIAG-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Catalyst-family LAN switches with cable-diagnostic-capable copper interfaces

Monitoring Examples

An operator sets ccdTdrIfAction to start on a port reporting intermittent link flaps, then polls ccdTdrIfResultValid and the per-pair TDR result status once ccdTdrIfAction reads notRunning(4); a pair reported as faulted (open or shorted) at a given distance would confirm a physical cabling fault rather than a switch port hardware issue.

What Can Be Monitored

  • PRBS test action/status per interface
  • PRBS bit-error count and reset time
  • TDR test action/status per interface
  • TDR last-test timestamp and result validity
  • per-pair TDR fault/distance results

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using ccdPrbsIfTestErrors OID:

Select a Cisco Catalyst-family LAN switch (copper cable diagnostics) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type ccdPrbsIfTestErrors into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. Indicates the number of errors which occurred during the current or most recent running of a test. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
