Category: Cisco Devices, RADIUS and AAA

Description: Extends Cisco AAA server management with additional server group and method list objects.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-AAA-SERVER-EXT-MIB?

CISCO-AAA-SERVER-EXT-MIB is a Cisco enterprise MIB that extends CISCO-AAA-SERVER-MIB with additional AAA (Authentication, Authorization, Accounting) management capabilities, including expanded server address types, server group configuration, application-to-server-group mapping, and global AAA settings. It exposes configuration objects such as accounting log size limits, server group and mapping table capacities, server key/encryption type, dead-time and timeout parameters, and controls to clear accounting logs. Its monitoring value is centered on the software/service availability of the AAA subsystem: operators can verify server group composition, per-server timeout/dead-time settings, and accounting log status to detect misconfigured or unreachable authentication servers that could affect network access control. It explicitly depends on and extends the base CISCO-AAA-SERVER-MIB. It is deployed on Cisco routers, switches, and wireless controllers that use centralized AAA (e.g., RADIUS/TACACS+) for network access authentication. Engineers can download the CISCO-AAA-SERVER-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-AAA-SERVER-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco router
  • Cisco switch
  • Cisco wireless controller

Monitoring Examples

An operator would inspect cAAASvrExtConfigTable entries for cAAAServerAddr, cAAAServerAddrType, and cAAAServerTimeOut/cAAAServerDeadTime to confirm AAA server reachability parameters, and check cAAASvrExtLocalAccLogMaxSize alongside cAAASvrExtClearAccLog usage to ensure the local accounting log isn't approaching capacity; a server whose configured dead-time keeps triggering would suggest that server is intermittently unreachable and being temporarily skipped in the AAA server group.

What Can Be Monitored

  • AAA server group membership
  • server address/key/encryption type
  • server timeout and dead-time settings
  • accounting log size/usage
  • application-to-server-group mappings
