Category: Cisco Devices, RADIUS and AAA

Description: Provides management objects for configuring and monitoring AAA (Authentication, Authorization, Accounting) server settings, including creating, modifying, and deleting RADIUS server configurations via SNMP.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring CISCO-AAA-SERVER-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is CISCO-AAA-SERVER-MIB?

CISCO-AAA-SERVER-MIB is a Cisco-specific MIB for configuring and monitoring external AAA (authentication, authorization, accounting) servers — RADIUS, TACACS+, LDAP, Kerberos, NTLM, or SDI — reachable from a Cisco device. Its casConfigTable, indexed by casProtocol and casIndex, lets a manager create/remove server entries with casAddress, casAuthenPort/casAcctPort, casKey, and casConfigRowStatus, while the parallel casStatisticsTable (which AUGMENTS casConfigEntry) exposes per-server authentication/authorization/accounting request, timeout, unexpected-response, server-error, and transaction success/failure counters, plus casState (up/dead) with casCurrentStateDuration, casTotalDeadTime, and casDeadCount. Because casState directly reflects server reachability and the request/timeout counters reveal degrading response quality, this MIB is a primary tool for monitoring AAA server health — a rising casDeadCount or casTotalDeadTime combined with casState transitioning to dead(2) indicates a RADIUS or TACACS+ server has become unresponsive, which would force the device to fail over to a lower-priority AAA server. It depends on CISCO-SMI for its enterprise anchor and generates a casServerStateChange notification whenever casState changes, and it is deployed on Cisco IOS routers and switches configured with external AAA servers; administrators researching the CISCO-AAA-SERVER-MIB MIB Browser view often check casStatisticsTable and casServerStateChange before building AAA-availability dashboards.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-AAA-SERVER-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco IOS routers and switches configured with external AAA servers

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls casState and casAuthenTransactionFailures for each configured casConfigEntry; a server transitioning to dead(2) alongside a rising casDeadCount indicates that RADIUS or TACACS+ server has stopped responding and traffic is failing over to the next-priority server.

What Can Be Monitored

  • AAA server up/dead state
  • server current/previous state duration and total dead time
  • authentication request/accept/reject/timeout counters
  • accounting request/response counters
  • server dead-transition count
  • server state-change notification

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using casAuthenRequests OID:

Select a Cisco IOS router and switch (AAA server) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type casAuthenRequests into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of authentication requests sent to this server since it is made active. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
