Category: Cisco Devices, IP and Core Protocols, Network Monitoring (RMON)

Description: Monitors TCP connection performance metrics including RTT, congestion window, and retransmission statistics on Cisco devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-TCP-METRICS-MIB?

CISCO-TCP-METRICS-MIB is a Cisco MIB that exposes quality metrics for TCP traffic flows as measured by a "flow monitor", a hardware or software entity that classifies traffic and periodically computes flow metrics over a defined measurement interval. It provides both a cumulative metrics table (cfmTcpMetricsTable) and an interval-based metrics table (cfmTcpMetricsIntTable), each carrying round-trip-time measurements along with scale/precision qualifiers and a validity flag. This MIB is squarely a performance-monitoring module: it lets an administrator assess network/application performance health by tracking TCP round-trip time and detecting when a measurement interval's data has changed (cfmTcpMetricsTableChanged), useful for spotting latency degradation or flow-monitor resets rather than hardware faults per se. It is a Cisco enterprise MIB but conceptually depends on general flow-monitoring/NetFlow-style concepts and standard SNMPv2-CONF/textual-convention frameworks for its notification and conformance groups. It is typically deployed on Cisco routers/switches with flow-monitoring or performance-monitoring features enabled, feeding an NMS that tracks WAN or application-path TCP quality. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the CISCO-TCP-METRICS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-TCP-METRICS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco routers and switches with flow-monitoring/performance-monitoring capability

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll cfmTcpMetricsTable/cfmTcpMetricsEntry, checking cfmTcpMetricsValid before reading cfmTcpMetricsRoundTripTime (scaled per cfmTcpMetricsRoundTripTimeScale and cfmTcpMetricsRoundTripTimePrecision), to track baseline RTT for a monitored TCP flow. Watching the parallel cfmTcpMetricsIntTable/cfmTcpMetricsIntEntry reveals RTT for the current measurement interval specifically, so a sudden spike there compared to the cumulative table would flag a recent latency degradation on that path. The ciscoTcpMetricsMIBNotifs notifications would fire to alert when such interval data changes significantly.

What Can Be Monitored

  • TCP round-trip time (cumulative and per-interval)
  • measurement validity flag
  • RTT scale/precision
  • metrics table change notifications
