What Is CISCO-OPTICAL-MIB?

CISCO-OPTICAL-MIB is a Cisco Systems, Inc. proprietary MIB defining physical-layer characteristics and performance statistics for optical interfaces, including Threshold Crossing Alarms (TCAs) when a performance-monitoring parameter exceeds its threshold. Its objects cover optics-status-change and optical-equipment-alarm notifications, a notification-enabled flag, and a controller table (wavelength, laser status, frequency, channel number, transmit power, optics type, RX/TX low/high power thresholds, LBC — Laser Bias Current — high threshold, status, port type, total RX/TX power), plus a per-lane table (RX/TX power) for multi-lane optics. As a performance/status MIB it lets an administrator watch optical RX/TX power against threshold and get alerted on TCAs on a Cisco optical interface. It is deployed on Cisco Systems optical-interface equipment. Engineers can download the CISCO-OPTICAL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-OPTICAL-MIB. How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using coiOpticalControllerLaserStatus OID:

Select a Cisco optical-interface equipment as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type coiOpticalControllerLaserStatus into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This object gives the current operational state of the Laser. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is anything other than 'up', since that indicates the condition this object reports has changed to one worth investigating. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
