Last Updated: 2017-03-14
Category: Alarm and Event Management, Optical and WDM, Vendor: Ciena
Description: Monitors active alarms and alarm history on the Ciena WaveServer optical transport platform.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CIENA-WS-ALARM-MIB?
CIENA-WS-ALARM-MIB provides the alarm data model for Ciena's WaveServer optical transport platform, a compact DWDM/coherent transport system used in metro and long-haul optical networks. It exposes an active-alarm table listing every currently raised alarm on the device, including its severity, acknowledgment state, timestamp, site/group/member identifiers, and a human-readable description. This is squarely a fault/status-monitoring MIB: an operator polls it to see the platform's overall health at a glance—unacknowledged critical alarms or recurring alarms on a specific optical port/module all surface here rather than needing separate hardware-specific counters. It works together with CIENA-WS-NOTIFICATION-MIB, which pushes the same alarm information as SNMP traps as they occur, so the active-alarm table and the notification stream are two views of the same underlying alarm data. It is used in carrier and enterprise optical transport deployments running Ciena WaveServer chassis for high-capacity point-to-point or metro DWDM links. Engineers can download the CIENA-WS-ALARM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CIENA-WS-ALARM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Ciena WaveServer optical transport platforms
Monitoring Examples
An admin polls cwsAlarmActiveTable/Entry, checking cwsAlarmActiveSeverity and cwsAlarmActiveAcknowledged for each cwsAlarmActiveAlarmInstanceId to find outstanding critical alarms. A persistent high-severity, unacknowledged entry in cwsAlarmActiveDescription tied to a specific cwsAlarmActiveSiteIdentifier/cwsAlarmActiveGroupIdentifier would point to an ongoing optical or hardware fault on that site/module that needs escalation.
What Can Be Monitored
- active alarm list
- alarm severity
- alarm acknowledgment status
- alarm timestamp
- site/group/member identifiers for the alarm source
