Organization: IETF IP Over IB (IPOIB) Working Group

Last Updated: 2005-09-01

Category: Optical and WDM

Description: Monitors BridgeWave millimeter-wave microwave radio link status, signal quality, and throughput.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is BMA-MIB?

Despite the short_desc label, the module_desc reveals this MIB actually defines managed objects for an InfiniBand Baseboard Management Agent (BMA) as documented in an IETF/IANA-registered RFC, not BridgeWave microwave radios; it belongs to the baseboard/chassis management category for InfiniBand-attached server and switch hardware. It exposes baseboard management identity and security configuration data: the managed unit type, IB Management Link (IBML) support and implementation details, and B-Key (baseboard management access key) values, protection bits, lease periods, and violation counts, plus a module information table. Its monitoring relevance is directly hardware/software status oriented: ibBmaBKeyViolations reveals unauthorized or failed baseboard-management access attempts (a security/health signal), while the module info table reports installed module GUIDs useful for hardware inventory and firmware/module identification. It is an IANA/IETF-registered MIB tied to the InfiniBand Baseboard Management Agent specification, so it depends on the broader InfiniBand management framework rather than a proprietary vendor MIB tree. It is deployed on InfiniBand switches, chassis, and server baseboard management controllers in high-performance computing and data center fabrics. Engineers can download the BMA-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BMA-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • InfiniBand switch/chassis baseboard management controller
  • InfiniBand-attached server hardware

Monitoring Examples

An operator would check ibBmaBKeyValue, ibBmaBKeyProtectBit, and ibBmaBKeyLeasePeriod to confirm baseboard management access-key protection is correctly configured, and monitor ibBmaBKeyViolations for a rising count that would indicate repeated unauthorized B-Key access attempts. Walking ibBmaModuleInfoTable/ibBmaModuleInfoEntry (indexed by ibBmaModuleInfoIndex) returns each installed module's ibBmaModInfoModGuid, useful for hardware inventory or detecting an unexpected module swap. ibBmaIsIBMLSupported and ibBmaIBMLImplementation indicate whether the IB Management Link is available on this baseboard, relevant when troubleshooting in-band management connectivity.

What Can Be Monitored

  • B-Key value and protection bit configuration
  • B-Key lease period
  • B-Key access violation count
  • installed module GUID/inventory
  • IB Management Link support and implementation
