What Is CHIPAGENT-MIB?

CHIPAGENT-MIB manages the base SNMP agent configuration for Chipcom (later acquired by 3Com) network equipment, providing generic agent-level identity and diagnostic objects shared across the Chipcom device family. It exposes product identification (chipGenProduct, chipGenServiceDate, chipGenSerial, chipGenID, chipGenVers), diagnostic mode control (chipGenDiagnostics), authentication-failure tracking (chipGenAuthFailureAddr), a last-configuration-change timestamp (chipGenTimeLastChanged), and an echo/ping-style connectivity test facility (chipEchoStart, chipEchoAddr, chipEchoPattern). This MIB is used to monitor basic hardware/software identity and status of a Chipcom device: confirming firmware/hardware version (chipGenVers), unit serial number, whether diagnostics mode is engaged, and when configuration was last changed, plus a lightweight active connectivity test via the echo objects and a running record of unauthorized SNMP access attempts. It forms the base/common agent MIB that other Chipcom product MIBs (such as CHIPDOT5-MIB and CHIPMODULE-MIB, which share the same chipcom/chipmib02/chipGen registration branch) build upon. It was deployed in enterprise LAN environments running Chipcom (3Com) hub, bridge, or switch equipment in the 1990s. Engineers can download the CHIPAGENT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CHIPAGENT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An admin reads chipGenVers and chipGenSerial to inventory firmware version and identify a specific Chipcom unit, and checks chipGenTimeLastChanged to see if a config change coincides with a reported problem. Setting chipEchoStart with a target chipEchoAddr and chipEchoPattern runs an active connectivity/echo test between agents, useful for confirming reachability across a Chipcom hub stack. A repeated update to chipGenAuthFailureAddr would flag repeated failed SNMP authentication attempts against the device, a potential security concern worth investigating.
