What Is CHIPCOM-MIB?

CHIPCOM-MIB is a legacy enterprise MIB from Chipcom (later acquired by 3Com) for managing Chipcom's Ethernet/token-ring switching hubs and LAN concentrators used in enterprise campus networks. It exposes general device-identification and diagnostic data such as product type, serial number, firmware/software version, service date, network-management (netman) configuration, and diagnostic self-test results, along with authentication-failure tracking. For hardware/software status monitoring it provides device identity (chipGenProduct, chipGenID), firmware version (chipGenVers), diagnostic self-test health (chipGenDiagnostics), and time since last configuration change (chipGenTimeLastChanged), giving administrators a basic picture of whether the hub is healthy and properly configured. As an older enterprise MIB it defines much of its own device-identity and diagnostics structure rather than relying on later standards like the Entity MIB. It is typically found in legacy enterprise campus network environments still running Chipcom/3Com switching hub hardware. Engineers can download the CHIPCOM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An admin polling chipGenProduct, chipGenSerial, and chipGenVers can confirm hardware model, serial number, and firmware revision for inventory purposes, while chipGenDiagnostics reports the result of onboard self-test diagnostics to catch failing hardware. chipGenTimeLastChanged indicates when the hub's configuration was last modified, and chipGenAuthFailureAddr records the address of a station that failed authentication, useful for spotting unauthorized access attempts. The chipEchoStart/chipEchoAddr/chipEchoPattern objects support an echo/loopback test used to verify connectivity to a specific address.
