Last Updated: 2003-12-19

Category: Alarm and Event Management, Network Monitoring (RMON)

Description: Provides general health check and availability monitoring objects for network device component status verification.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CHECK-MIB?

CHECK-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF Internet-Draft MIB (draft-nunzi-check-mib-00, provisionally registered under mib-2.7777 pending IANA assignment) that defines a generic, on-device health-check framework rather than modeling any specific hardware or protocol. Its checkResultTable defines named checks with a configurable checkResultInterval and checkResultSeverityThreshold, while the companion checkRuleTable defines one or more comparison rules per check — each checkRuleOid identifies a managed object (a single instance or an entire columnar object), checkRuleValue supplies a control value, and checkRuleOperation (equal, less, greaterOrEqual, delta, etc.) defines the comparison; checkResultSeverity is set to the worst severity among all failed rules for that check. Failed rules are recorded in checkFailureTable and can trigger a checkFailed notification once severity crosses the configured threshold, moving repetitive object-comparison logic from the management station down onto the managed node itself for better scalability. It has no vendor-specific dependencies beyond a device implementing this MIB and the objects referenced by checkRuleOid, and network engineers who search for checkmib documentation are looking for exactly this rule-based, on-device health-check framework.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CHECK-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (IETF Internet-Draft draft-nunzi-check-mib, no RFC number assigned), not tied to a specific manufacturer

Monitoring Examples

An operator defines a check in checkResultTable with a rule in checkRuleTable whose checkRuleOid points to an interface error counter and checkRuleOperation set to lessOrEqual against an acceptable threshold; if the counter's delta between polling intervals exceeds that threshold, checkResultSeverity rises above checkResultSeverityThreshold and a checkFailed notification is generated without the manager having to poll and compare the raw counter itself.

What Can Be Monitored

  • defined check entries and their severity/interval configuration
  • per-check comparison rules against arbitrary managed objects
  • failed-rule records and their severity
  • check-engine administrative/operational status
  • check-failed notifications
