What Is CERENT-454-MIB?

CERENT-454-MIB is a Cisco Systems, Inc. MIB (module identity explicitly names Cisco as organization, and its objects live under the CERENT-GLOBAL-REGISTRY cerentProducts/cerentModules tree originally established by Cerent Corporation before its 1999 acquisition by Cisco) for managing the Cisco ONS 15454 optical transport platform; note that the vendor here is Cisco/Cerent, not Ciena, which was never involved with this product line. Its central cerent454AlarmTable holds every currently raised alarm or condition on the network element, indexed by an alarm index and a large Cerent454AlarmType enumeration covering hundreds of specific fault conditions (e.g., external failures, excessive switching, cross-connected CFM service issues); each row carries the raising object's slot/port/line/entity-class location, a notification-class object combining severity with service-affecting status, a sysUpTime-based timestamp, an object name/additional-info string, and separate severity/status/service-affecting fields. Companion tables track previously reported alarms (cerent454ReportedAlarmTable) and performance-monitoring threshold crossings (cerent454ThresholdTable), alongside notification enable/sent counters and an extensive corresponding NOTIFICATION-TYPE section defining the SNMP traps generated for each alarm and configuration-completion event (such as BLSR/MSSP multi-node table updates). This makes the MIB the primary alarm-and-event surface for the ONS 15454, complementing separate cross-connect and interface configuration MIBs in the same Cerent/Cisco family. It is deployed on Cisco ONS 15454 SONET/SDH optical transport network elements, and administrators can download the CERENT-454-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CERENT-454-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco ONS 15454 SONET/SDH optical transport network elements

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls cerent454AlarmTable for rows with cerent454AlarmSeverity of critical or major and cerent454AlarmServiceAffecting set to service-affecting, then reads cerent454AlarmObjectName and cerent454AlarmSlotNumber/cerent454AlarmPortNumber to locate the failing card and port; a persistent critical alarm whose cerent454AlarmTimeStamp keeps advancing (rather than clearing) indicates an ongoing fault condition on that slot/port requiring hands-on intervention.

What Can Be Monitored

  • active alarm table (type, severity, service-affecting status)
  • previously reported alarm history
  • performance-monitoring threshold-crossing table
  • notification enable/sent counters
  • alarm location (slot/port/line/object) fields

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cerent454SentNotifications OID:

Select a Cisco ONS 15454 SONET/SDH optical transport network element as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cerent454SentNotifications into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports a count of v1+v2 notifications sent out by the agent. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
