Organization: Cisco Systems, Inc.

Last Updated: 2002-11-11

Category: Optical and WDM, Vendor: Cisco ONS/Cerent

Description: Monitors optical power levels, wavelength parameters, and OSNR on Cisco/Cerent ONS optical transport interfaces.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CERENT-OPTICAL-MONITOR-MIB?

CERENT-OPTICAL-MONITOR-MIB monitors optical transmission characteristics on Cisco/Cerent ONS optical transport network elements (Cerent being the company Cisco acquired to form the ONS product line). It exposes a table of optical monitoring parameters per direction and interface — such as received/transmitted optical power, wavelength, and OSNR — along with configurable high/low alarm and warning thresholds evaluated over 15-minute and 1-day intervals. This is squarely a hardware health/performance MIB: it lets administrators track optical signal degradation, detect when power levels cross alarm or warning thresholds, and catch early 'degrade' conditions before a fiber link fails outright. The module description states it is explicitly an adaptation of Cisco's own CISCO-OPTICAL-MONITOR-MIB, so it shares structure and semantics with that standard Cisco module. It is deployed on Cisco ONS optical transport platforms (SONET/SDH/DWDM) in carrier and enterprise optical networks. Engineers can download the CERENT-OPTICAL-MONITOR-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CERENT-OPTICAL-MONITOR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco ONS optical transport platform (formerly Cerent)

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll cOpticalMonTable/cOpticalMonEntry, keyed by direction (cOpticalMonDirection) and parameter type (cOpticalMonParameterType), reading cOpticalParameterValue for each optical interface. If cOpticalParameterValue crosses cOpticalParamLowAlarmThresh or cOpticalParamLowWarning15MinThresh, it signals falling received optical power, often due to fiber degradation, a dirty connector, or an aging transmitter. Comparing 15-minute versus 1-day thresholds (cOpticalParamHighWarning15MinThresh vs cOpticalParamHighWarning1DayThresh) helps distinguish a transient spike from a sustained power trend.

What Can Be Monitored

  • optical received/transmit power levels
  • wavelength parameters
  • OSNR
  • high/low power alarm thresholds
  • 15-minute and 1-day power warning trends
