What Is CAPWAP-BASE-MIB?
CAPWAP-BASE-MIB is an IETF standards-track MIB (RFC 5833) defining the base managed objects for CAPWAP (Control And Provisioning of Wireless Access Points), the protocol by which a wireless LAN controller (Access Controller, AC) centrally manages Wireless Termination Points (WTPs, i.e. thin access points). It exposes session-capacity and current-session-count objects for both WTPs and wireless stations, security policy options for the CAPWAP data and control channels (DTLS, authentication), a table of configured AC names with priority for WTP failover, and notifications for CAPWAP events. Its monitoring role covers both operational capacity/status (how many WTPs and stations are currently connected versus the licensed/configured limit) and software-level configuration (security policy in force), which together indicate whether the controller is nearing capacity or has WTPs failing to establish sessions. As a vendor-neutral IETF MIB it is designed to be implemented alongside CAPWAP protocol binding MIBs such as CAPWAP-DOT11-MIB for technology-specific details. It is deployed on wireless LAN controllers (Access Controllers) managing fleets of CAPWAP-based thin access points, consistent with the CAPWAP-BASE-MIB RFC that defines this base object set.

Monitoring Examples
An operator would compare capwapBaseWtpSessions against capwapBaseWtpSessionsLimit, and capwapBaseStationSessions against capwapBaseStationSessionsLimit, to see if the controller is approaching its licensed capacity for access points or client stations. Reviewing capwapBaseAcNameListTable/capwapBaseAcNameListEntry entries (capwapBaseAcNameListName, capwapBaseAcNameListPriority) helps confirm WTPs are configured to fail over to backup controllers in the correct priority order. Checking capwapBaseDataChannelDTLSPolicyOptions and capwapBaseControlChannelAuthenOptions confirms whether the expected encryption/authentication policy is actually enforced on the CAPWAP tunnels.
