What Is AVICI-BAY-MIB?

AVICI-BAY-MIB is a vendor MIB from Avici Systems, a core router manufacturer, for monitoring the physical bay slots of an Avici router chassis. It exposes per-bay status/LED indicators, alarm cut-off control, card insertion/occupancy, and configurable temperature thresholds. This is squarely a hardware-health monitoring MIB: it tracks bay/module temperature against critical, major, and minor thresholds, critical/major/minor alarm LED states, card presence, and alarm/power status, making it central to detecting overheating cards or power/alarm conditions in the chassis. It works alongside Avici's broader chassis/system MIBs, referenced through objects like aviciBayControllerNotifications, for full system alarm correlation. It is deployed on Avici core routers in carrier backbone environments where continuous bay-level temperature and alarm monitoring is critical to avoid hardware damage. Engineers can download the AVICI-BAY-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

An admin would poll aviciBayTable rows keyed by aviciBayIndex, comparing the current bay temperature against aviciBayTempCriticalThreshold/aviciBayTempMajorThreshold/aviciBayTempMinorThreshold to catch overheating cards, and checking aviciBayCriticalLed/aviciBayMajorLed/aviciBayMinorLed for active alarm indicators. A bay temperature crossing aviciBayModTempCriticalThreshold accompanied by an aviciBayCriticalLed alarm and an aviciBayNotifications trap would signal an overheating module requiring immediate attention or an aviciBayAlarmCutOff action.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using aviciBaySlotRxOctets OID:

Select an Avici Systems core/backbone router (legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type aviciBaySlotRxOctets into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The total number of slot octets received. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
