Category: Hardware and Environment, Vendor: Avici

Description: Monitors memory pool allocation, utilization, and fragmentation statistics on Avici Systems backbone router modules.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is AVICI-MEMORY-MIB?

AVICI-MEMORY-MIB is a module from Avici Systems covering memory management on its high-end backbone/core router platform modules. It exposes a per-platform memory pool table reporting total, used, free, and free-page memory counts, plus page size and largest-contiguous-free-block figures. This directly monitors hardware memory health, letting an operator detect memory exhaustion or fragmentation on router line cards or CPU modules before it causes allocation failures or instability. It is likely used alongside Avici's platform/chassis and entity-style MIBs for identifying which module a given memory table row belongs to. It is deployed on Avici backbone/core routers in carrier and large enterprise networks. Engineers can download the AVICI-MEMORY-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in AVICI-MEMORY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Avici Systems backbone routers

Monitoring Examples

An administrator polls aviciPlatformMemoryTable/aviciPlatformMemoryEntry for a given platform, comparing aviciPlatformMemoryUsed against aviciPlatformMemoryTotal to compute utilization, and checks aviciPlatformMemoryLargestFree alongside aviciPlatformMemoryFreePages to detect fragmentation. A shrinking aviciPlatformMemoryLargestFree value even while overall free memory looks adequate signals fragmentation that could soon cause allocation failures on that module.

What Can Be Monitored

  • total memory
  • used memory
  • free memory
  • free pages
  • largest free memory block
  • memory fragmentation
