What Is ASCEND-SPARING-MIB?
ASCEND-SPARING-MIB is a proprietary Ascend MIB managing hot-spare card configuration and automatic replacement behavior in modular Ascend chassis. It exposes configuration objects identifying which slot(s) hold spare cards and status objects reflecting spare-card presence and health, along with records of automatic failover/replacement events. This is a hardware-redundancy monitoring MIB: it lets operators confirm a configured spare card is present and healthy, and alerts them when the system has automatically swapped in a spare after a primary card failure, directly supporting high-availability hardware monitoring. It depends on the chassis/card-inventory conventions used elsewhere in the Ascend MIB family to identify slots and card types. It was deployed on modular Ascend WAN access chassis in carrier and ISP environments where continuous availability is required, and an ASCEND-SPARING-MIB download from vendor MIB archives lets an operator load it into a MIB browser for reference.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ASCEND-SPARING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Ascend modular WAN access chassis (e.g., MAX TNT series)
Monitoring Examples
An operator checks the sparing configuration to confirm which slot is designated as a hot spare and polls its status to verify the spare card is present and healthy, ready to take over. A recorded automatic-replacement event, where the sparing status shows the spare card became active, indicates a primary card failure occurred and was handled without a truck roll. Reviewing spare-card health regularly ensures the redundancy the design relies on hasn't silently failed itself.
What Can Be Monitored
- hot-spare card presence/health
- spare slot configuration
- automatic failover/replacement events
- primary card failure status
