Category: Device Management, Vendor: Ascend/Lucent
Description: Manages watchdog timer configuration and system reset behavior on Ascend access equipment.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is ASCEND-MIBWATCHDOG-MIB?
ASCEND-MIBWATCHDOG-MIB is a proprietary Ascend MIB managing the watchdog timer configuration and system reset behavior on access equipment. It exposes objects controlling watchdog timeout thresholds and reset policy, along with status reflecting recent watchdog-triggered resets. This MIB is directly a hardware/software health-monitoring tool: a watchdog reset indicates the device's software hung or crashed and had to be recovered by a hardware timer, making watchdog reset counts and timestamps a key uptime and stability indicator. It is a low-level system MIB that other feature MIBs in the Ascend family implicitly depend on for overall device availability. It was deployed on Ascend WAN/dial access concentrators to ensure automatic recovery from software lockups in unattended deployments. Engineers can download the ASCEND-MIBWATCHDOG-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ASCEND-MIBWATCHDOG-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Ascend WAN/dial access concentrators (e.g., MAX, Pipeline, TNT series)
Monitoring Examples
An operator checks the watchdog reset count and last-reset-time objects to see whether the device has recently recovered from an unexpected software hang. A pattern of recurring watchdog-triggered resets, rather than a single isolated event, points to an underlying software bug or resource-exhaustion condition rather than a one-time glitch. The configured watchdog timeout threshold is also reviewed to confirm it matches the vendor's recommended value for the deployed software version.
What Can Be Monitored
- watchdog-triggered reset count
- last reset timestamp/cause
- watchdog timeout configuration
- system reset/recovery behavior
