What Is CISCO-DATA-COLLECTION-MIB?

CISCO-DATA-COLLECTION-MIB manages an SNMP-based periodic data collection facility on Cisco devices, letting a management application select MIB object instances to be sampled on a schedule and stored locally in virtual file-like entities (VFiles) before being transferred elsewhere. It exposes configuration for VFile storage persistence, maximum size limits and size-hit behavior, plus a VFile table describing each collection job's name, description, command, format, and collection mode along with current size tracking. Its monitoring value is meta-level: rather than exposing hardware sensors directly, it manages the mechanism used to collect other MIB data over time, so administrators watch cdcVFileCurrentSize against cdcVFileMaxSize and collection mode to ensure scheduled data collection jobs are running and not silently truncating data. It has an inherent dependency on whatever target MIB objects are configured for collection, since it is a generic sampling framework layered over arbitrary MIB instances. It is deployed on Cisco devices used as data sources for centralized performance-management systems doing longer-term trend collection without constant real-time polling. An operator would check cdcVFileTable entries by cdcVFileIndex, reading cdcVFileName, cdcVFileCommand, and cdcVFileCollectMode to confirm a collection job is defined and active, then monitor cdcVFileCurrentSize versus cdcVFileMaxSize to detect a job approaching cdcVFileMaxSizeHitsLimit. If cdcVFilePersistentStorage is disabled and the device reloads, an admin would expect collected VFile data to be lost, explaining gaps in downstream trend reports.
