Category: SNMP Framework, Vendor: Ascend/Lucent

Description: Describes advanced SNMP agent capabilities and feature extensions for Ascend access equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ASCEND-ADVANCED-AGENT-MIB?

ASCEND-ADVANCED-AGENT-MIB is a proprietary MIB from Ascend Communications, a WAN/remote-access equipment vendor later absorbed into Lucent, describing the advanced capabilities and feature extensions supported by the device's SNMP agent. Rather than exposing one type of operational data, it exposes agent-level metadata: flags and objects indicating which optional management features and extended MIBs the running software build actually supports. Its monitoring role is indirect but important for software-status visibility: by confirming which advanced features an agent exposes, a management system verifies that a given firmware/software load is fully functional before relying on further hardware or performance data from that device. It is foundational to the broader family of ASCEND-* MIBs (such as call, VoIP, and interface MIBs), since it advertises whether the agent supports those companion modules. It was deployed on Ascend WAN/dial access concentrators used by ISPs and enterprises for remote-access aggregation. Engineers can download the ASCEND-ADVANCED-AGENT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ASCEND-ADVANCED-AGENT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ascend WAN/remote-access concentrators (e.g., MAX, Pipeline, TNT series)

Monitoring Examples

A management station queries the advanced-agent capability objects during discovery to learn which optional Ascend feature sets, such as extended call statistics or VoIP support, are enabled on a given unit's software build, before attempting to poll those vendor-specific MIBs. If a capability that was present before a firmware upgrade is missing afterward, that reveals a software regression or an incomplete/corrupted software load. This MIB is typically queried once per device discovery cycle rather than on an ongoing polling schedule.

What Can Be Monitored

  • SNMP agent capability flags
  • availability of companion extension MIBs
  • software/firmware feature set
