Description: Declares SNMP agent capabilities for Port Access Entity (802.1X) management on Cisco switching platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-PAE-CAPABILITY?

CISCO-PAE-CAPABILITY is an AGENT-CAPABILITIES module declaring which objects and groups of CISCO-PAE-MIB (Port Access Entity / 802.1X management) are implemented on a given Cisco switching platform's SNMP agent. It belongs to the network access control (802.1X port authentication) technology area, describing agent support rather than exposing live authentication data itself. As a capability declaration it lets a management station know which 802.1X-related port authentication objects, groups, and notifications are supported before it begins polling or subscribing to traps on that device. It has no direct role in exposing uptime, temperature, or CPU data, but underpins reliable monitoring of 802.1X port-authentication status by preventing polling of unimplemented objects. This module is deployed alongside CISCO-PAE-MIB across the general population of Cisco switches enforcing 802.1X port-based network access control. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the CISCO-PAE-CAPABILITY file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-PAE-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco switch with 802.1X port authentication

Monitoring Examples

An NMS reads this capabilities module during onboarding of a new switch model to confirm which 802.1X port-authentication object groups and notifications from CISCO-PAE-MIB are supported before configuring alerting on port authentication failures. This avoids scheduling polls for authentication-state objects that a particular switch's software image doesn't implement.

What Can Be Monitored

  • supported 802.1X/PAE object groups
  • supported notification groups
  • agent capability per software release
