What Is ARISTA-XCVR-DWDM-MIB?

ARISTA-XCVR-DWDM-MIB is an Arista Networks EOS module for monitoring and configuring DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) optical transceivers installed in Arista switches. It exposes operational and administrative channel/grid/frequency settings, tunability, modulation format, and forward-error-correction quality data such as uncorrected codewords. Its monitoring emphasis is on the hardware status of pluggable optical transceivers, whether a transceiver is tunable, its actual vs. administratively-set operating frequency/channel, and uncorrected FEC codewords as a direct signal of optical link quality degradation. It complements Arista's standard interface/transceiver inventory MIBs though it stands as its own module for DWDM-specific parameters. It is deployed on long-haul or metro DWDM optical links terminated on Arista switches in data center interconnect or service-provider transport applications. Engineers can download the ARISTA-XCVR-DWDM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ARISTA-XCVR-DWDM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Arista EOS switch with DWDM pluggable transceiver

Monitoring Examples

aristaXcvrDwdmTable/aristaXcvrDwdmEntry exposes aristaXcvrDwdmOperChannel, aristaXcvrDwdmOperGrid, and aristaXcvrDwdmOperFrequency alongside the corresponding administrative objects, letting an admin confirm the transceiver is actually tuned to its configured wavelength. aristaXcvrDwdmUncorrectedCodewords is a key optical-quality counter, a rising count indicates the DWDM link's forward error correction is failing to fully correct errors, signaling fiber degradation, dirty connectors, or amplifier issues before the link fully fails; aristaXcvrDwdmTunable and aristaXcvrDwdmModulationFormat confirm the transceiver's capability and current modulation scheme.

What Can Be Monitored

  • operational vs admin channel/grid/frequency
  • transceiver tunability
  • modulation format
  • uncorrected FEC codewords (optical link quality)

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using aristaXcvrDwdmUncorrectedCodewords OID:

Select an Arista Networks EOS switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type aristaXcvrDwdmUncorrectedCodewords into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The Uncorrected Codewords Count associated with the transceiver. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
