Description: Alvarion BWA user session tracking including session state, duration, and bandwidth utilization.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ALVARION-USER-SESSION-MIB?

ALVARION-USER-SESSION-MIB is a proprietary Alvarion Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) MIB for tracking connected subscriber user sessions on the wireless access device. It exposes per-session data -- username, client IP address, session duration, idle time, and MAP/subscriber group association -- along with aggregate active and maximum user counts split between access-controlled and non-access-controlled users. Monitoring here targets service and session-level status rather than physical sensors: comparing active counts against configured maximums reveals whether the base station is approaching its subscriber capacity limit, and per-session idle time or duration outliers help identify stale or abnormally long-lived sessions that may indicate a stuck client or authentication problem. It builds on Alvarion's broader BWA/802.1X and MAP subscriber-group authentication framework used elsewhere in the Alvarion MIB family. It is deployed on Alvarion wireless broadband base stations serving multiple subscriber client devices, used to track active user load and session health. Engineers can download the ALVARION-USER-SESSION-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ALVARION-USER-SESSION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Alvarion BreezeACCESS/BreezeMAX wireless broadband access (WiMAX) base stations

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll coUserSessACUserCount and coUserSessNonACUserCount against coUserSessACUserMaxCount and coUserSessNonACUserMaxCount to detect a base station nearing its subscriber capacity. Walking coUserSessionTable to inspect coUserSessIdleTime and coUserSessSessionDuration per coUserSessUserName and coUserSessClientIpAddress flags sessions idle far longer than expected as a sign of a hung client connection. Grouping sessions by coUserSessMAPGroupName helps identify whether load is concentrated in a particular subscriber group.

What Can Be Monitored

  • active vs. max user session counts
  • per-session duration and idle time
  • client username and IP address
  • MAP/subscriber group association

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using coUserSessSessionDuration OID:

Select an Alvarion wireless broadband base station as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type coUserSessSessionDuration into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. Indicates how long the user's session has been active. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in seconds), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
