This object specifies the remaining number of hops (bridge hops) before a Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) Bridge Data Unit (BPDU) on the Common and Internal Spanning Tree (CIST) will expire. The value decrements as the BPDU traverses switches, preventing loops in meshed networks. An operator uses this to diagnose topology changes or validate that STP is converging properly across the network.
