What Is ALCATEL-IND1-IPMCAST-MIB?

ALCATEL-IND1-IPMCAST-MIB is an Alcatel(-Lucent) vendor-private MIB, modeled on the IETF MBONED working group's draft IP multicast MIB, that manages IP multicast routing and forwarding state on Alcatel OmniSwitch platforms independent of the specific multicast protocol or address family in use. Its global alaIpMcastEnable object turns IP multicast routing on or off system-wide, while alaIpMcastRouteEntryCount tracks multicast routing-table size. The alaIpMcastInterfaceTable records which multicast protocol is active per interface, the alaIpMcastRouteTable holds the multicast forwarding/routing entries themselves, alaIpMcastRouteNextHopTable enumerates the outgoing interfaces/next hops for each route, and alaIpMcastBoundaryTable defines administrative scope boundaries that block multicast traffic for specific group ranges on specific interfaces. This is useful for confirming multicast routing is enabled and populated as expected, diagnosing why a multicast stream is not reaching a downstream interface, and verifying that scope boundaries are correctly containing traffic. It depends on the underlying multicast routing protocol (PIM, DVMRP, etc.) actually populating these tables, and is deployed on Alcatel OmniSwitch multicast-capable switches, and administrators can download the ALCATEL-IND1-IPMCAST-MIB file for building multicast monitoring tools.

An operator polls alaIpMcastRouteEntryCount and alaIpMcastRouteTable to confirm a multicast group's route exists and checks alaIpMcastRouteNextHopTable for the expected outgoing interfaces; an empty route entry combined with alaIpMcastEnable showing enabled would indicate the multicast routing protocol has not yet installed forwarding state for that group.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using alaIpMcastInterfaceInMcastOctets OID:

Select an Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise OmniSwitch switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type alaIpMcastInterfaceInMcastOctets into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of octets of multicast packets that have arrived on the interface, including framing characters. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
