What Is ACCOUNTING-CONTROL-MIB?

ACCOUNTING-CONTROL-MIB is an IETF standards-track MIB for managing collection and storage of accounting/usage information on connection-oriented networks such as ATM, where usage records are written to files for later retrieval and billing/analysis. Its data categories are configuration-oriented: selection criteria for which connections/subtrees get accounted, and file management for the resulting accounting data files. It supports monitoring of software/service status by exposing the state of accounting selections and file records (e.g. row status, active/inactive), letting an operator confirm the accounting subsystem is actually running and producing usable files rather than any hardware environmental data. As a generic accounting framework it is commonly used together with technology-specific MIBs (e.g. ATM MIBs) that supply the actual connection data being accounted. Deployment context is carrier and enterprise ATM/connection-oriented network elements requiring usage-based billing or capacity accounting, and network engineers configuring usage-based billing on such elements typically keep the ACCOUNTING-CONTROL-MIB reference at hand when defining selection criteria.

Monitoring Examples

An operator would configure acctngSelectionTable/acctngSelectionEntry (acctngSelectionSubtree, acctngSelectionList, acctngSelectionType) to specify which connections get accounted, then verify acctngSelectionRowStatus shows the selection is active. Polling acctngFileTable/acctngFileEntry (acctngFileIndex, acctngFileName) would confirm accounting files are being generated and named correctly for retrieval; an accounting selection stuck in a non-active row status would explain missing usage records for billing.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using acctngFileCurrentSize OID:

Select a device implementing ACCOUNTING-CONTROL-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type acctngFileCurrentSize into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports, in bytes, the current size of the accounting file currently being written to. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an Integer32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the file size exceeds a size close to the configured accounting-file limit (e.g. 90% of the configured maximum), so the file can be rotated before data is lost. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
