Category: Xylan OmniSwitch

Description: Covers automatic VLAN learning on Xylan OmniSwitch equipment, including configuration and MAC-to-VLAN assignment management.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is XYLAN-AVL-MIB?

This proprietary MIB from Xylan Corporation (maker of the OmniSwitch LAN switch line, later acquired by Alcatel) manages the Auto VLAN Learning (AVL) feature, which dynamically assigns switch ports/MAC addresses to VLANs based on authentication. It exposes configuration objects for the authentication prompts, banners, and messages shown during the AVL login sequence, plus mode and timeout settings and the last authenticated user/event. Its monitoring value is largely around software configuration and authentication state, letting administrators verify the login banner/prompt text and check the last authentication event to confirm the AVL feature is functioning as configured. It has no explicit dependency noted on other MIBs, being a self-contained Xylan feature module. It is deployed on Xylan OmniSwitch LAN switches using dynamic, authentication-based VLAN assignment. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the XYLAN-AVL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in XYLAN-AVL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Xylan OmniSwitch LAN switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would check xylanAVLlastuser and xylanAVLlastauthevent to confirm the most recent AVL authentication succeeded, and review xylanAVLauthmode and xylanAVLtimeout to verify the configured authentication mode and session timeout. Unexpected values in xylanAVLfailmsg-triggered events or a stale xylanAVLlastauthevent would indicate authentication requests are failing or the AVL feature is misconfigured.

What Can Be Monitored

  • auto VLAN learning authentication mode
  • login/prompt banner text
  • last authenticated user
  • last authentication event
  • authentication timeout setting
