Category: World Wide Packets Metro Ethernet

Description: Manages World Wide Packets Ethernet Switch Module port configuration, VLAN membership, and switching statistics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is WWP-ESM-MIB?

WWP-ESM-MIB is a World Wide Packets (Ciena LEOS) proprietary MIB for the vendor's Ethernet Switch Module (ESM), covering port configuration, VLAN membership, and switching/traffic statistics, along with SNMPv3 trap forwarding configuration (e.g., v3TrapForwardingTable). It exposes both configuration data (port and VLAN settings) and operational/performance data (switching statistics counters), giving visibility into how traffic is being forwarded through the module. Its monitoring role includes tracking port-level traffic counters to detect congestion or errors, and confirming that SNMPv3 trap/notification forwarding destinations are correctly configured so that fault events actually reach a management station. It relies on standard SNMPv3 notification mechanisms (SNMP-TARGET-MIB/SNMP-NOTIFICATION-MIB conventions) for its trap forwarding table, alongside the vendor's own port/VLAN model. It is deployed on World Wide Packets/Ciena LEOS Metro Ethernet access platforms that use pluggable Ethernet switch modules, managed through the WWP-ESM-MIB MIB.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in WWP-ESM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • World Wide Packets / Ciena LEOS Ethernet Switch Module (ESM)

Monitoring Examples

The v3TrapForwardingTable is a concrete sample object, used to configure which SNMPv3 targets receive forwarded traps/informs from the ESM; an admin would poll or audit this table to verify a management station is correctly registered to receive alerts, and a missing or misconfigured entry would explain why fault notifications from the module are not being received. Alongside this, port switching statistics counters on the ESM would be polled to detect abnormal error or discard rates on a given port.

What Can Be Monitored

  • SNMPv3 trap forwarding targets (v3TrapForwardingTable)
  • port VLAN membership
  • port switching statistics
  • port configuration state
