Category: World Wide Packets Metro Ethernet

Description: Manages World Wide Packets SNMP community string access control and management interface security.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is WWP-COMMUNITY-MIB?

This proprietary MIB module, from World Wide Packets (WWP), later part of Ciena's LEOS-based Metro Ethernet switch line, defines objects for configuring and managing SNMP community strings that control read/write access to the device's management interface. It exposes configuration-oriented data such as community string names, associated access privilege levels, and status, rather than performance counters or environmental telemetry. As a security/configuration MIB it does not itself report hardware health, but it indirectly supports monitoring by governing which management stations are permitted to poll the device's other MIBs for uptime, hardware, and software status information. It follows standard SNMPv2/v3 community-based access-control conventions rather than depending on a specific external MIB. It is typically deployed on WWP/Ciena Metro Ethernet access and aggregation switches where administrators need to audit or lock down SNMP access alongside broader network management. Engineers can download the WWP-COMMUNITY-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in WWP-COMMUNITY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ciena/World Wide Packets Metro Ethernet switch
  • WWP LEOS-based access/aggregation switch

Monitoring Examples

No sample objects were available for this proprietary module in the source data, so specific table names cannot be confirmed. In general, a community-management MIB of this kind exposes a table of configured community-string entries with associated access-type (read-only/read-write) and status columns, which an administrator would poll to catch a stale or overly permissive community string that could allow unauthorized configuration changes.

What Can Be Monitored

  • configured community strings
  • community access level (read/write)
  • SNMP access source restrictions
  • community entry status
